Puppy Kisses are Good for the Soul by Howard Weinstein

Originally published 2001, updated 2008; available ebook and print.

This is actually two books in one cover. Part I is The Amazing Life and Times of Mail Order Annie, anecdotes about the author’s life with his Pembroke Welsh Corgi. He covers looking for a puppy through dealing with Annie’s death at age 15. The story is studded with excellent tips and “Annie taught me” sidebars that are valuable information for all dog owners. Weinstein made most of the all-too-common mistakes in training his first dog, and turns these stories into funny and helpful advice.

Part II is Teach Your Dog Well, and discusses deciding what type of dog is right for you, where and how to get a dog, and how to raise and train your pet. Weinstein’s approach is simple and easy to follow and full of excellent tips.

I highly recommend this excellent book for all new (and not so new) dog owners or those planning to get a dog. It is applicable for all breeds, although Corgi owners will especially enjoy it.

Howard Weinstein is a journalist, writing teacher, and writer of science fiction novels (over a dozen Star Treks books). Due to his experiences with Annie the PWC, his first dog, he also became a dog trainer.
